Manchester City’s Title Hopes Take a Hit with 2-2 Draw Against Crystal Palace

Manchester City’s bid to defend their Premier League title suffered a setback as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. The result leaves City eight points behind league leaders Liverpool in fourth place.

With the Merseyside derby postponed earlier in the day, City had the chance to close the gap at the top to six points. However, they required equalizers from Erling Haaland and Rico Lewis to salvage a point, despite Lewis being controversially sent off later in the match.

Under cold and wet conditions in south London, Palace struck first through Daniel Munoz, whose precise finish followed a clever pass from Will Hughes that exploited City’s defense. Munoz’s goal, his second in two games at Selhurst Park, gave Palace an early advantage.

Haaland restored parity on the half-hour mark shortly after Ruben Dias made a crucial block to deny Jefferson Lerma’s powerful effort. City’s defense looked vulnerable, with Ismaila Sarr missing a golden opportunity by firing over the bar from the edge of the box.

City’s attack, led by Kevin De Bruyne, threatened to turn the tide. De Bruyne set up Haaland for a one-on-one with goalkeeper Dean Henderson, whose face prevented a goal. Ilkay Gundogan then hit the post, and Savinho squandered the rebound.

Haaland eventually equalized with a looping header from Matheus Nunes’ cross, continuing his impressive scoring record against Palace. However, City’s momentum faded after the break. Maxence Lacroix capitalized on defensive lapses, outjumping Kyle Walker to restore Palace’s lead with a powerful header.

City leveled again through Rico Lewis, who finished brilliantly after a flowing move involving De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva. It marked Lewis’ third Premier League goal, all of which have come against Palace.

The game turned sour for Lewis when he received a second yellow card for a collision with Trevoh Chalobah, a decision that VAR couldn’t overturn. Reduced to 10 players, City struggled to create chances in the closing stages.

The draw served as a reality check for City, following their win over Nottingham Forest. With seven potential starters sidelined by injuries, manager Pep Guardiola admitted that the team must fight to stay in contention this season.

For Crystal Palace, the draw extends their strong run of form, with just one loss in their last eight matches across all competitions. Manager Oliver Glasner was pleased with the performance but acknowledged his team could have done more, especially after taking the lead twice. Palace now sit 16th in the league, four points clear of the relegation zone.
